How to install Opening it on a Mac for the first time no Apple signature yet, so macOS blocks the first launch

There is no Apple-registered developer signature yet, so macOS blocks the very first launch. Go through the steps below once; after that a double-click opens it.

  1. 01Downloads › the .dmg file

    Open the file you downloaded

    Double-click the dmg. You will see the Demeter icon next to an Applications folder.

  2. 02dmg window › Applications

    Drag it into Applications

    Drag the Demeter icon onto the Applications folder. Once it has copied, you can close the dmg window.

  3. 03Applications › Demeter

    Open it once

    Double-click it. A "not opened" dialog appears. Expected, because there is no signature. Dismiss it.

  4. 04System Settings › Privacy & Security

    Click 'Open Anyway'

    Scroll down. Next to "Demeter was blocked" there is an Open Anyway button. Confirm with Touch ID or your password.

  5. 05Applications › Demeter

    Open it again and you are done

    Click Open. From now on a plain double-click works. The first launch takes about a minute. Let it finish even if the window looks empty.

How to install Installing on Windows for the first time no code-signing certificate yet, so Windows stops the first run

There is no code-signing certificate yet, so Windows stops the first run. It does not mean a virus. It means a program Windows has not seen before. Two clicks in the order below and it installs.

  1. 01Downloads › the setup .exe

    Run the file you downloaded

    Double-click it. A blue "Windows protected your PC" window appears. It means the program is new to Windows.

    Click 'More info'

    Click the small More info text in the middle of the window; another button appears below.

  3. 03Windows protected your PC › Run anyway

    Click 'Run anyway'

    The installer opens. It never asks for administrator rights.

  4. 04Installer › Language › Next

    Pick a language and install

    Choose Korean or English and click Next; installation finishes in a moment.

  5. 05Start menu › Demeter

    Open it from the Start menu

    The first launch takes about a minute. Let it finish even if the window looks empty. From then on the app notifies you and updates itself.

API setup

Alpaca and Kraken API keys: connecting your accounts

Connect Alpaca for US stocks and ETFs and Kraken for crypto. Issue both keys without withdrawal permission. Keys stay on your computer and we cannot see them. The last step is always the same: paste them into Demeter under Settings › Trading channels · API keys.

Alpaca and Kraken are wired in but not yet verified with a real order.

    Open an Alpaca account

    Create an account at alpaca.markets. A paper (simulated) account is ready immediately; a live brokerage account needs identity verification and funding. Alpaca charges no commission on US-listed stocks and ETFs.

  2. 02Dashboard › Paper / Live switch

    Pick the environment

    The dashboard has separate Paper and Live environments, each with its own keys. Start with Paper (Demeter's paper mode runs against Alpaca's paper endpoint) and switch to Live once you have watched it for a while.

    Generate the keys

    In the dashboard's API Keys box press Generate New Key. You get an API Key ID and a Secret Key; the secret is shown only once, so copy both now. Regenerating invalidates the old pair.

  4. 04Live account › Funding

    Fund the live account

    For live trading, deposit USD by bank transfer in the dashboard. Demeter keeps its cash floor and never withdraws. Alpaca trading keys cannot move money out of the account.

  5. 05Demeter › Settings › Trading channels · API keys

    Paste into Demeter

    Settings › Trading channels · API keys › Alpaca: paste the Key ID and Secret, choose Paper or Live to match the keys, set the stock broker to Alpaca and save.

  1. 01kraken.com › Sign up › Verify

    Have a verified Kraken account

    API trading needs a Kraken account verified to at least the Intermediate level, so that you can deposit USD and trade spot.

  2. 02Profile › Settings › API › Create API key

    Open the API page

    From the profile menu choose Settings › API (kraken.com/u/security/api) and press Create API key. Give it a name such as Demeter.

    Choose permissions

    Turn on only Query Funds, Query Open/Closed Orders & Trades, Create & Modify Orders and Cancel/Close Orders. Leave Withdraw Funds and every funding permission off. Demeter never needs them. Optionally restrict the key to your IP.

  4. 04Create API key › Generate key

    Generate and copy

    Press Generate key. Kraken shows the API Key and the Private Key once; copy both. If you set an expiry, note the date. Demeter tells you when a key stops working.

  5. 05Demeter › Settings › Trading channels · API keys

    Paste into Demeter

    Settings › Trading channels · API keys › Kraken: paste the API Key and Private Key, set the crypto exchange to Kraken and save.
